Nowadays, most of the world’s population is concerned about global health issues. As of 2012, about half of all adults in the USA —117 million people—have one or more chronic health conditions. One of four adults has two or more chronic health conditions. [1] As the number of people with chronic diseases is increasing, the ability for qualitative and constant monitoring of their health is limited. This results into the situation when many people are not receiving medical help on time and of a good quality, which can be life-threatening.

Modern technologies are able to improve the situation. Healthcare’s M2M adoption (sometimes called ‘telemedicine’) represents the network of connected medical devices and communication technology together to provide qualitative monitoring of health state, symptoms and diseases and has already proved itself highly effective in doing this. ITS Technology company claims, that from 2013 to 2018 the use of M2M technology in healthcare will increase by a factor of 10. [2]

There are numerous case studies, which show the effectiveness of telemedicine. Among those is the notification system MobileHelp, which is able to constantly monitor the health state and current location of the patient and send the information to the emergency medical center. The system uses wireless GPS technology for voice and data transmission and allows receiving the necessary medical consultation from emergency specialists. MobileHelp also includes the Caregiver Tools platform for notifying the relatives of the patient if emergency occurs. [3]

Existing technologies allow monitoring whether a patient takes the right medicine at the right time and at the right dose. There are pillboxes with sensors embedded aimed at reporting to the medical specialist whether the pills are taken correctly. This can both prevent accidental medical overdose and send alerts to relatives if the patient has forgotten to take the pill.

PSA has an expertise in telemedicine as well. Our company has designed the initial version of the iOS application, which is aimed at providing access to the US global EMR medical patient information warehouse from any location. The innovation was targeted at medical service providers to serve patients in a quicker and more efficient manner as well as reduce errors caused by medical transcriptions or service provider miscommunications.

Enterprise IoT solutions are definitely changing the way in which healthcare is organized. PSA is constantly improving its proficiency in the use of M2M technology. We are sure, that our long-term effective partnership with our clients can change the healthcare situation for the better. 1. How about new iOS HealthKit? I believe it is a real breakthrough in healthcare, because it allows apps that provide health and fitness services to share their data with the new Health app and with each other. A user’s health information may be used for gathering medical data and its further analysis that will help to treat diseases.

    • Thank you for a nice comment, Alexander. HealthKit is another example of how M2M technologies can be effectively used in the healthcare industry, as it aggregates data from a range of apps or connected medical devices. We would agree that its emergence on the market can be considered a true breakthrough in healthcare.
